Australia was at war for 6 years, from PM Menzies’ “melancholy duty” announcing its outbreak on Fathers’ Day, September 3, 1939, to PM Chifley’s joyous declaration in August 1945 that “the war is over.”  Australians fought on many continents, seas and skies and there were dark periods when Australia’s forces and even the nation itself were locked in desperate struggles.  The galleries telling these stories are rich in relics that illustrate the realities of those years.
